How Long Do Lash Extensions Last? What Actually Affects Retention

How long lash extensions last is one of the first questions clients ask before booking. The answer is not one fixed number because extensions are attached to natural lashes that are constantly growing and shedding.

Why do lash extensions shed?

Your natural lashes move through a growth cycle. When a natural lash sheds, the extension attached to it can leave with it. Seeing an extension attached to a shed natural lash can therefore be normal.

What affects lash retention?

Natural shedding, application, cleansing, skin and hair products, friction, sleep position, heat, steam, exercise and maintenance can all influence how a set wears.

Does washing extensions make them fall out?

Proper cleansing is part of lash care. Makeup, oil and debris should not be left around the lash line in an attempt to preserve retention. Clean gently according to your artist's instructions.

When should I get a fill?

Most clients maintain their set before it becomes very sparse. The right interval depends on your shedding and how full you prefer your lashes to look.

At Lash Artisan Studio in Toronto, we troubleshoot retention by looking at the whole picture rather than automatically blaming one factor.
